Concerns on the mining activities of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC) on Sibuyan, Romblon

Last week, ICHRP Canada sent a letter to the Director General for Southeast Asia and Oceania of Global Affairs Canada (GAC), detailing our concerns on the mining activities of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC), which is a subsidiary of a Canadian company, Altai Resources Inc., on the island of Sibuyan, province of Romblon. We brought to GAC’s attention the concerns of our Philippine partners on APMC’s mining activities, the legal violations committed by the company and its harassment of locals who are peacefully protesting the company’s activities.

In it, we requested GAC to discuss these matters with the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines and to take immediate and concrete steps to ensure APMC adheres to Canada’s guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct Abroad, protect the human rights of the Sibuyan people affected by its actions and ensure that the company rectifies the harm it has done on the island.
