STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY
The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) Canada expresses its strong solidarity with the victims, survivors, and families in the Philippines following the recent affirmation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of its jurisdiction over the murder as crimes against humanity case of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
We join the Rise Up for Life and for Rights and the broader human rights community in welcoming this critical development. It marks an important step toward accountability for the thousands of lives lost in the context of the so-called “war on drugs,” and for the many who continue to suffer its enduring impacts.
For years, ICHRP Canada, together with our members and partners, has stood alongside Filipino communities in amplifying calls for justice, supporting documentation efforts, and advocating for international accountability mechanisms. This moment reflects the tireless work and courage of the victims’ families, grassroots organizations, and human rights defenders who have refused to be silenced despite threats, harassment, and repression both by Duterte’s supporters and the current Government of the Philippines.
The ICC’s affirmation of jurisdiction reinforces a fundamental principle: that grave human rights violations cannot be met with impunity. It affirms that when domestic remedies fail or are obstructed, international mechanisms remain vital pathways for justice.
We underscore that this development is not the end, but part of a continuing process. Justice must be pursued fully, fairly, and without delay. The voices of victims and their families must remain at the centre of this process.
ICHRP Canada reiterates its unwavering commitment to stand in solidarity with the Filipino people in their ongoing struggle for truth, justice, and accountability. We call on the international community, including the Canadian government, to support the ICC process and uphold the rights and dignity of all victims.
Justice delayed must not be justice denied.
